Wind Creek Bethlehem hopes that come November you’ll be able to place sports bets in time for Thanksgiving Day games.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on Wednesday approved Wind Creek Hospitality’s application to offer sports betting online and at its Southside gaming hall. Wind Creek plans to begin construction in mid-August and hopes to open by Nov. 21.
The gaming company’s contracted with Betfred USA to operate the sportsbook, which will be located in the current site of Buddy V’s Ristorante, and the online wagering. Celebrity chef Buddy Valastro opened the red sauce joint in 2016, just off the gaming floor, taking the place of St. James Gate Irish pub.
Buddy V’s will continue to provide food and drinks in the sportsbook, said Kathy McCracken, executive vice president and general manager of Wind Creek Bethlehem.
The sports book will add about 3,400 square feet to the gaming floor bringing it to 154,000 square feet and create 13 new jobs.
The space is still being designed, but Wind Creek anticipates 79 TV monitors, a sportsbook cage with eight cashiers as well as 13 self-service wagering kiosks. There will also be four supervisors and a manager.
Betfred USA, a fully opened subsidiary of the United Kingdom-based Betfred, opened its first USA office in Las Vegas last year, said Bryan Bennett, chief operating officer of Betfred USA. It currently operates a sportsbook in Iowa, with a second one opening next week in Colorado when casinos reopen in the state, he said.
Wind Creek voluntarily shut down March 15 amid the coronavirus pandemic and it is one of Pennsylvania’s last casinos to get into the sports wagering game, which was legalized in the state as part of a 2017 gambling expansion.
The area’s first sportsbook launched in early March at The Downs at Lehigh Valley in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, which is operated by Mohegan Sun Pocono. That sportsbook launched just ahead of coronavirus-related cancellations, which included a major sports betting holiday: the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Wind Creek Hospitality bought the Southside casino from Las Vegas Sands Corp. in May 2019 for $1.4 billion. The Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem opened May 22, 2009.
After a three month closure, Pennsylvania’s 12 casinos are beginning to slowly reopen at 50% capacity with patrons and staff wearing masks, fewer slot machines to promote social distancing and enhanced cleaning.
Two casinos in the Pittsburgh area -- Meadows and Rivers -- reopened June 9 with restrictions in place. Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin will reopen on June 12. Both reopenings went quite well, said Kevin O’Toole, gaming control board executive director.
Wind Creek Bethlehem does not yet have a reopening date as the Lehigh Valley remains in the state’s yellow phase of reopening.
When it can reopen, Wind Creek says it is considering offering gambling reservations so customers don’t have to wait in line and the casino can operate under capacity.
